SC Magdeburg goes into the national team week with a win. On Sunday, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team wins against HSV Hamburg 41-28 (21-12) and strengthens its top position in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga.

The opening minutes could hardly have gone better. Sergey Hernandez fended off Hamburg’s first shot, then Felix Claar sunk the ball into the opponent’s goal. Next attack, same game: The save was followed by the goal – 2-0 (4th). In the eighth minute, Claar extended the lead to 5-2, Matthias Musche added a little later to make it 7-3 (11th), before Omar Ingi Magnusson scored the 8-3 (12th).

The guests on the other side tried to regroup in a timeout. But the Magdeburg seven offered them little to catch up again. Attentive in defence and consistent in finishing, SCM continued to put pressure on and ran one counter-attack after another. Magnus Saugstrup scored early to make it 12-5, 16th, and the lead was even extended by the break (21-12, 30th).

At half-time, the celebrations continued away from the game. On the one hand, national coach Alfred Gislason was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt by Prime Minister Sven Schulze. On the other hand, the SCM team of 1981 was honored, which became European champion of the club teams on this very day 45 years ago.

The celebration mood continued in the second half. Although HSV changed the defence, acted with the seventh outfield player and once again applied tactical tricks: Wiegert’s team did not let itself be thrown out of rhythm. Immediately after the restart, Magnusson made it 22-12 (32nd).

Magdeburg continued relentlessly. In the 40th minute, Matthias Musche made it 29-17 and the Laola wave swept through the green-red fan rows. And not for the last time on this evening, on which SCM not only secured the next two points in the league with a clear victory, but also said goodbye to the national team week with a good feeling.
