Special award for ex-Magdeburg Gislason

Honour to whom honour is due. National coach Alfred Gislason is awarded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The celebration will take place at the match of the handball players of SC Magdeburg.

Alfred Gislason was coach at SC Magdeburg for seven years, standing on the sidelines of the Elbestadt team from 1999 to 2006. During this time, he led the team to the first all-German championship (2001) and the first Champions League title for a German team (2002). Since 2020, the Iceland-born coach has been coaching the German national handball team, won silver medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and finished second with the team at the 2026 European Championships.

The 66-year-old is now being honoured for his work. Prime Minister Sven Schulze awards Gislason with the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt. During the half-time break of the match between SC Magdeburg and HSV Hamburg, the medal will be presented on Sunday, May 10, 2026 in the GETEC Arena.

By the way: The national coach is already a guest in the arena today when the A-youth of SC Magdeburg plays against THW Kiel in the second leg of the German championship .
