An evening for eternity: In 1981, SC Magdeburg was crowned European champion of club teams. A historic triumph that is still unforgotten today. We look back.

May 10, 1981. Exactly 45 years ago, something historic happened. In Dortmund’s Westfalenhalle, SC Magdeburg and TuS Nettelstedt met in the final for the IHF title of “European Champion of Club Teams”. Nettelstedt had arrived as winners of the “European Cup Winners’ Cup”, while Magdeburg had qualified via the “European Cup of Champions”.

In front of around 7,000 spectators, the Green-Reds started strongly and went into half-time with a 14-10 lead. Although the East Westphalians fought their way back to 18-17 in the meantime, SCM then pulled away decisively thanks to outstanding goalkeeping performances and a quick counterattack. When Ingolf Wiegert scored in the final seconds to make it 24-19, the triumph was finally sealed – and the Magdeburg fans who had travelled with them celebrated their team exuberantly.

The team from back then is still unforgotten today. In addition to the already mentioned Ingolf Wiegert, the squad included captain Ernst Gerlach and the players Günter Dreibrodt, Peter Pysall, Udo Rothe, Helmut Kurrat, Harry Jahns (†), Jörg Fischer, Olaf Haase, Manfred Hoppe, Hartmut Krüger, Rainer Baumgart (†), Michael Gottschalk, Wieland Schmidt and Gunar Schimrock. The team was coached by Klaus Miesner (†) and Wolfgang Lakenmacher (†).

On the occasion of the anniversary, a large part of this legendary team will be welcomed today in the hall for the match against HSV Hamburg and honored by the club.
