For SC Magdeburg, this week’s trip in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League takes them to Szeged, where the team around coach Benner Wiegert wants to take the next sporting hurdle. Meanwhile, some familiar faces are also waiting in Hungary.

They’re a top team and especially at home. It’s going to be a difficult game,” warns backcourt player Elvar Örn Jonsson ahead of the game at OTP Bank – PICK Szeged on Wednesday (18:45 / DYN, DAZN, Pluto.tv). “But we will prepare well and adapt the tactics accordingly. Of course, our goal is to win and if we stick to ourselves, I see good chances for that.”

Coach Michael Apelgren’s team recently suffered a 31-28 defeat at FC Barcelona, before that they won at home against Paris Saint-Germain (31-29) and away at GOG (36-31). In addition, a 33-34 defeat against Orlen Wisla Plock was recorded on the international stage.

With Mario Sostaric (33 goals), Szeged currently has the third-best scorer in the competition – behind Magdeburg’s Omar Ingi Magnusson (34) and Berlin’s Mathias Gidsel (42). In addition, there are top international players such as Jim Gottfridsson, who was newly signed before this season. There are also some former SCM players in the squad: Pivot Gleb Kalarash and goalkeeper Tobias Thulin are now playing for the Hungarians, as is midfielder Janus Smarason, who is currently out injured.

“I’m looking forward to seeing her again. It will certainly be a warm welcome,” says SCM coach Bennet Wiegert. Of course, he does not travel to Hungary just for the nice exchange. After four wins so far this season, the own series of successes is to be continued. “This is not an easy task in Szeged. For me, this is a team that has the potential to make it to the Final4 with its well-rehearsed squad, just like last year.”

Meanwhile, it is not only important to withstand the sporting challenges, but also the travel strains. After several away matches over the last few weeks, the SCM was only five days in Magdeburg before it went on Tuesday via Budapest to the southern Great Plain.

The next home game will not take place until October 23 against HC Eurofarm Pelister in the Champions League (8:45 p.m., tickets) – after the game at SC DHfK Leipzig (Sunday, 4 p.m.) and the 2nd round of the cup at Dessau-Roßlauer HV (Tuesday, 7 p.m.) have been played in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga
