What an achievement! SC Magdeburg also wins the fifth game of the Machineseeker EHF Champions League and wins in Szeged with 34:30 (18:15). With this, the team consolidates first place in the preliminary round group B.

It could hardly have been more balanced. In the first minutes, both Szeged and Magdeburg scored in constant alternation, so that both sides scored two goals after five minutes played. In this phase, little things were decisive. And since Sergey Hernandez was able to take away one or two more balls between the posts, SCM gained an advantage (6-4, 9th).

Driven by the atmospheric backdrop of their own fans, however, the hosts stepped up again and continued to play the game on an equal footing. After 20 minutes played, the score was 11:10 from SCM’s point of view. Because Bennet Wiegert’s seven showed off with effectiveness, the lead could be extended again. In the 25th minute, Tim Zechel scored the 15:12.

Without pivot Magnus Saugstrup, who did not travel for personal reasons, Zechel and position partner Oscar Bergendahl not only took on more responsibility in the circle, but also in defence – and the Hungarians were able to keep it at 15 goals until the break.

In the second half, the offense stuttered a bit at first. It was not until the 39th minute that the first SCM goal after the restart was scored, when Bergendahl netted from the circle. But since the other side also did not really get a chance, the consequences were limited. Szeged briefly reduced the deficit (19-18, 41st), but had to let go again a little later (22-19, 44th). In the 48th minute, it was Bergendahl again who established the first four-goal lead (27-23).

Sebastian Barthold increased the lead to plus five (29-24, 51st) and although the Hungarians once again resorted to the seventh outfield player, it became more and more apparent as the game progressed that Magdeburg would also end this encounter victorious and thus remain in the Champions League without losing any points.
