It’s time for the last few meters. SC Magdeburg still has four matches to play in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga. The next one could be the decisive one for the league leader.

“The anticipation is growing from day to day. I feel this tingling,” said coach Bennet Wiegert before Thursday’s game against SG Flensburg-Handewitt (8 p.m., live on Dyn). The constellation could hardly be more exciting. First against second, Champions League winner against European League winner – the handball bar is high. “This is a sonorous duel of the last few years and especially the top game of the Bundesliga.”

The in-form guests around DHB captain Johannes Golla have recently been able to win five games in a row. With the top scorers Emil Jacobsen, Simon Pytlick and Marko Grgic, just a few Flensburgers are mentioned who could also be dangerous for SCM. But it will not only be a game at the highest level from an individual point of view. Two of the strongest offensive lines in the league meet, with the Schleswig-Holsteiners coming mainly through the tempo game and the counter-attack.

“We have to pay attention to everything against Flensburg. For me, this is the team with the strongest tempo game in the league. Our retreat and our own tempo game will therefore be a key,” warns Wiegert. “But it’s about so much more. We need something special. Normal will not be enough. We need a special energy – from the outside and from the inside. We have to show our best handball over 60 minutes to take something with us, but then we can reward ourselves for the strong season. You can only look forward to this game!”

It is clear that SCM starts this game as the leader with the best conditions: seven points ahead of SG Flensburg-Handewitt and eight ahead of third-placed Füchse Berlin as well as the best goal difference of the three clubs. Accordingly, only one point is missing to fulfil the big dream of the next championship trophy.

“Everything is at stake against Flensburg. It’s going to be an uphill battle. They have so much individual class and overall enormous quality that there is a lot to pay attention to. A compact defence, an attack that is as flawless as possible – we have to function at all levels. But if we play our game, we’ll win,” Magdeburg’s Omar Ingi Magnusson looks ahead.

With a sold-out GETEC Arena, the stage is set for a rousing handball evening and a real highlight in the season finale in any case.

Attention: Berliner Chaussee has been closed in one direction since May 18 at the level of the GETEC Arena due to a construction site . A detour is signposted. P1 can still be reached.
