There is the thing! SC Magdeburg plays 31:30 (13:13) against SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the top match on Thursday and thus secures the title in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga just three weeks before the end of the season.

At 9.45 p.m. the time had come. Cheers, tears, dances of joy – everything came together on the pitch when it was clear that SCM had brought the German championship to Magdeburg for the fourth time in the club’s history. At the beginning of the game, however, this outcome was not foreseeable.

Both sides fought for every ball from the first minute and showed why the duel between Magdeburg and Flensburg had been declared a top game in advance – regardless of the table situation. The defensive lines were particularly distinguished, which, together with their goalkeepers, ensured that there were initially few goals to be seen despite fast rallies (2-2, 7th).

Since Flensburg’s Benjamin Buric got off to the better start between the posts against SCM keeper Sergey Hernandez, the guests were able to take the lead (10-6, 19th). However, the change in the goalkeeper position to Matej Mandic after a good quarter of an hour brought a new impulse. The Croatian-born player saved several balls directly and was a significant factor in SCM reducing the deficit to 10-11 (23rd). A little later, Elvar Örn Jonsson scored the 11-11 (25th), before Tim Hornke made it 12-11 (27th) from the seven-metre line.

After the break, it remained close, with both teams picking up where they left off in the first half. The SG set the pace, Magdeburg followed suit – the 6600 fans in the hall got to see a thrilling handball game. In the 43rd minute, Gisli Kristjansson scored to make it 21-21 and the game was still open.

In the final phase, however, SCM made a few too many mistakes, and Flensburg made it 24-27 (50th). But coach Bennet Wiegert’s seven continued to throw everything into it and reduced the deficit to 27-28 (55th) and then made it 30-30 (59th). With the terrific support of the green-red supporters, it was enough for the victory – and the German championship.
