Reunion with SCM legend Bartosz Jurecki

It’s been a good eleven years since Bartosz Jurecki last wore the SC Magdeburg jersey. At the home game on June 5, 2015 in the GETEC Arena, SCM had to admit defeat against the Rhein-Neckar-Löwen with 27:32, but the circle runner was still celebrated. First with his seven goals, then with his tearful farewell and induction into the SCM Hall of Fame.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been eleven years since I left Magdeburg,” says the now 47-year-old. “I have dedicated most of this time to the coaching profession. I’ve been coach at Corotop Gwardia Opole for three years, with whom I want to reach the play-offs this year.”

REUNION WITH OLD ACQUAINTANCES

In preparation for the new season, the Polish first division team now meets SC Magdeburg – and for Jurecki, the duel will also be a reunion with many familiar faces. Together with Matthias Musche, assistant coach Yves Grafenhorst and head coach Bennet Wiegert, he once played for SCM.

“I’m very happy to see him again. We played together for six years and probably saw each other more often than our families at the time. Our paths have crossed from time to time in handball, but it’s nice that we now have a little more time together and can also exchange ideas away from the game,” said Wiegert with regard to the meeting of the two on Saturday in Ilsenburg (3 p.m., live stream on volksstimme.de). After the opening success in the first test match against HSC Coburg (36-20), the next victory for SCM is to follow despite all the friendship there.

Jurecki is also looking forward to the reunion with great anticipation: “The atmosphere before the game against SC Magdeburg is great. There is already a lot of talk about this game here in the city and some fans will also travel with us,” reports the coach, who also leads the Polish juniors.

His contact with Magdeburg has never been broken. “I had the pleasure of being part of the club’s 70th anniversary. It was nice to experience the great atmosphere in the hall again and, of course, to meet many acquaintances from my time in Magdeburg again.”
