SCM celebrates first victory with new captains

Two hours before kick-off, the first fans were already standing in front of the hall and awaited the SC Magdeburg team in midsummer temperatures. More than 1000 spectators had gone to the SWH.arena to watch the BWG Cup match against HSC Coburg – but of course also to get autographs from the players and take selfies with them. Not to mention the fact that coach Bennet Wiegert’s team also had the championship trophy in their luggage, with which they could be photographed.

At 5.30 p.m. it really started. Led by the new captain Magnus Saugstrup, SCM ran in. The 30-year-old Danish international, who has been wearing the Green-Reds jersey since 2021 and also leads the current World and European champions onto the international field, succeeds Christian O’Sullivan, who left the club after ten years. Saugstrup will be supported by vice-captain Matthias Musche. Born in Magdeburg, he has been with SCM for 26 years and has developed into an absolute figure of identification over the years.

On the pitch, the team then sold itself as usual confidently. After five minutes played, it was 4-0, and it was not until the eighth minute that the Upper Franconian managed to overcome Matej Mandic in the Magdeburg goal. Due to some inaccuracies at SCM, the lead dwindled somewhat (5-4, 10th), but the upper hand always remained with the German champions. After a good quarter of an hour, Tim Thielicke celebrated his debut with the first team and scored directly to make it 8-5 (17th). By the break, the lead had been extended to 16-10.

In the second half, Oscar Bergendahl followed up from the circle (17-10, 31st) and Dominik Kuzmanovic and Oskar Vind also got minutes of play. The latter entered the scorer list for the first time at 18-11 (35th). Antonio Serradilla was mainly used in defence, with all new signings – but also the entire rest of the squad – finding their way into the game. Regarding the score, it remained clear: After 45 minutes it was 25:15, after the final whistle the scoreboard announced a 36:20.

Magnus Saugstrup: “We started well today and did our job impressively. It was fun here in front of this backdrop. Of course, the fact that I can now lead the team as captain makes me very proud. You don’t just want to play well, you’re also a bit louder. Even if not much else changes on the field, it’s more about organizational things. But what’s more important is that we had a good start today and everyone sold themselves well.”
