For many years, Tim Hornke shaped handball in Magdeburg – on the pitch, in the dressing room and in the hearts of the fans. In an interview, the 35-year-old talks about his special connection to the city, unforgettable moments and what will drive him in the future.

You have spent a large part of your career here in Magdeburg. What is it that distinguishes the city for you?

A lot. I started my career here in Magdeburg as a professional and I ended my career here as well. That was a large part of my handball time. I was able to meet my wife here, my children were born here – and we plan to keep the centre of our lives in Magdeburg in the long term. That’s why the city means a lot to me just like the club.

Many also say that there is a very special atmosphere here in the hall with the fans. What do you say to that?

I can confirm that. I believe that the fans in Magdeburg are really unique. That there is no other such thing in the whole of Germany and perhaps also in the whole world in this kind of support. I’m relatively sure that I’ll miss joining GETEC.

When we look back all the years. Imagine if you had to set up an All-Star team. Who would be in there from your former teammates?

It’s very difficult to choose a top 7. I would probably take the current team and field several teams at once – and from the former team-mates I would add Piotr Chrapkowski, because he has always been able to create a good atmosphere in the dressing room and off the field. I also had a lot of fun playing with him.

“It’s clear that I’ll miss the boys”

Who would be such an opponent who really annoyed you?

There were many opponents who were unpleasant at times. During my time in Hannover in the 2nd division, for example – I was still very young, 17 or 18 – I played against Tomasz Tłuczyński. He was already a Polish national player at that time and a winger who sometimes went into 1 on 1, which is not so common nowadays. I’ve always found that relatively unpleasant to defend.

What will you miss more now after such a long time? The games and the adrenaline or rather the climate in the dressing room?

For now, I’m glad I don’t feel this adrenaline all the time. I’m looking forward to the time, which will be a bit quieter. Nevertheless, I will certainly miss both. It’s clear that I’ll miss the boys. Although I’m not out of the world and will continue to live in Magdeburg. I’m sure I’ll come to a game and sit together with the boys in the dressing room for at least a little moment.

Every week a lot of adrenaline, every week something new. How can things go on now?

A year and a half ago, I founded a company that I had been running a bit on the side. That had been my balance to handball for a long time. The company is active in the field of real estate management and real estate brokerage. I will continue to expand this in the future. I can already point to a small real estate portfolio that should continue to grow.

So if you are looking for a property manager now, you are welcome to contact you?

That would be possible, yes. The company is called Real Estate Management Tim Hornke. The homepage will be available soon.

Finally, do you have anything else you would like to say?

I would like to thank the fans again for their support over the last few years. I think I’ve said it very, very often, but I’m happy to say it again because it simply deserves recognition: It’s world class how you support us. Please keep it up like this. I think that I will be here again from time to time and that we will not completely lose sight of each other.

We are looking forward to it!
