“In a game like this, everything has to be perfect”

The last big highlight of this handball year is imminent. SC Magdeburg will travel to Cologne for the fourth time in a row for the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4. The semi-finals in the Machineseeker EHF Champions League are already tough.

“Last year, hardly anyone expected us and then we still won,” Magdeburg’s Felix Claar remembers the title a good year ago. “That was absolutely magical. To make it back into the final weekend with the many good teams in Europe is fantastic.”

After a convincing group stage and the successful quarter-finals against Pick Szeged, Bennet Wiegert’s team has qualified for the final tournament of the Champions League. Now it is important to build on the performances of the past weeks and take the next step. With the Füchsen Berlin, an opponent awaits in the semi-finals on Saturday (3 p.m. / Dyn, DAZN, DF1) that is only too familiar. The two Bundesliga opponents have already fought two intense duels this season – both with better outcomes for SCM. But the DHB Cup winners have once again proven their qualities this season and, like Magdeburg, are hoping for the next title.

“In principle, it’s not much different from last year,” Claar classifies the fixture, which corresponds to the 2025 final encounter. “In a game like this, everything has to be perfect. But we have a run and built up a good feeling, not least because of the German championship this year. That can make all the difference. Nevertheless, it will be a hard piece of work. We have to keep the tempo high and be quick on our feet.”

For SCM it is the fourth participation in the EHF FINAL4 in a row. Due to the successes in 2002, 2023 and 2025, three titles can be reported in the club’s history so far – and the coveted trophy could also be brought to Magdeburg this year. “We are looking forward to the weekend and to the special atmosphere in Cologne. To be able to play there again is not a matter of course,” Bennet Wiegert looks ahead. “Every team will look for its chance. We can go into the games with a certain self-confidence that we have built up over the season. But we know that it won’t be easy. You need a perfect weekend in Cologne – and that’s what we want to deliver.”
