Eventful days lie behind SC Magdeburg. After winning the German championship, the official handover of the championship trophy and the emotional celebrations with the fans , the Green-Reds now have the last task of the season in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga ahead of them. On Sunday, SCM will visit HSG Wetzlar (3 p.m., Dyn).
While coach Bennet Wiegert’s team has nothing to lose with a nine-point lead over second-placed Füchse Berlin, everything is at stake for the hosts. The sixteenth-placed team is fighting to stay in the league on the last matchday and needs every point in the long-distance duel against GWD Minden in 17th place, who are level on points.
Despite the different starting positions, SCM wants to end the successful season with a concentrated performance. Head coach Bennet Wiegert once again demands full focus from his team on the task ahead: “We want to finish the season well. Especially because there will be many Magdeburg fans there again and because it should be a matter of course in this league to always give your best,” says Wiegert. “We don’t want to be the ones who get involved in the relegation battle now, but want to shape the game confidently from our side.”
The HSG should not be underestimated. Rúnar Sigtryggsson’s team was in good shape at HSV Hamburg on Thursday and only had to admit defeat in the final minutes. In addition, there is a strong home record: The Central Hessians have not lost the last four meetings at home and have also won against THW Kiel.
“It’s going to be an absolute cracker. Wetzlar is fighting against relegation and we are of course forewarned that it will be an absolute battle,” Magdeburg’s left winger Mathias Musche looks ahead. “It’s a special situation for us, but I’m sure the team will manage to focus on the game again. We want to do our thing and win this game as usual.”
