A victory at the end. SC Magdeburg wins the last game in the Daikin Handball Bundesliga. At a strong HSG Wetzlar, the German champions win 31-30 (17-17) and round off the season in good form.

Bennet Wiegert’s team faced an energetic Wetzlar team from the start. The Central Hessians, who needed every point in the fight to stay in the league, kept up with SCM’s high pace, ran back strongly and once again put pressure on the fast middle. After a good five minutes, the score was 4:5.

Magdeburg, however, did not let itself be disturbed. Again and again, Albin Lagergren and Co. went into the duel, fought for gaps – or a penalty on the other side. Daniel Pettersson scored to make it 9-8 (14th) and thus took the lead. But the hosts remained a tough opponent to play against. Despite fast rallies and a lot of physical effort, it remained close until the break (17-17).

In the second half, the Green-Reds started with a brief inattention (17-19, 32nd), but promptly recovered from it despite an additional time penalty for Felix Claar. Manuel Zehnder equalized from the seven-yard line (34th), then Matej Mandic increased the lead to 20-19 (35th) after a save. In the 42nd minute, the home side were in front again and the scoreboard showed a 22-23 score from SCM’s point of view.

As a result, it remained heated in the final phase and the physicality continued to increase. Albin Lagergren saw red in the 43rd minute after a hit to the face, the number of penalties remained high on both sides – and both teams gave each other nothing. Wetzlar to 23-25 (46th), Magdeburg followed suit with 26-25 (53rd). It was only in the final phase that Magdeburg took the points.
