SC Magdeburg loses the semi-finals of the DHB Cup

Out of the DHB Cup. SC Magdeburg loses the dramatic semi-final at the Lidl Final4 in Cologne against Bergischer HC 30-31 (11-11, 22-22, 27-27) after overtime and a seven-metre throw. Tomorrow it’s all about bronze.
The initial phase was balanced. The two teams started energetically into the encounter, driven by their fans, delivered the expected tough duel. BHC set the pace, Magdeburg followed suit – after seven minutes, both sides had netted three times each.
The defensive lines were particularly impressive and once again posed problems for their opponents. At SCM, the middle block showed its quality and goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez shone between the posts, so that the scoreboard showed only five goals conceded after a good quarter of an hour. At the same time, however, their own attacking performance stuttered. Although Gisli Kristjansson found his gaps with his quick one-on-one and Omar Ingi Magnusson was confident from the line, the inaccuracies piled up elsewhere. In the 20th minute, the Bergisch took the lead with two (5:7) and coach Bennet Wiegert took his first time-out.
The re-sorting helped. After a minus three (5-8, 21st), Magdeburg’s Felix Claar equalized with his third goal to make it 9-9 (27th) and SCM took the lead for the first time a little later (11-10, 29th). Nevertheless, it remained exciting after the break. Even after 40 minutes, SCM and the Bergisch were almost equal (15-14). Kristjansson and Co. continued to wear themselves down, fighting for every centimeter. But it didn’t look much different on the other side and it went into extra time.
Even after two five extra minutes, the game was not yet decided and it went into the seven-meter shootout with a 27:27. Only there did SCM lose out. Since the Füchse Berlin previously won the first semi-final 39:36 (20:16) against TBV Lemgo, Bennet Wiegert and his seven will now play for bronze against the Lipperlanders on Sunday at 12:45 p.m.
