SC Magdeburg loses the final of the Wartburg Cup on Sunday. Against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team finished 32-33 (15-16).

A noisy Werner-Aßmann-Halle, the clash of two top Bundesliga teams – the final of the Wartburg Cup promised pure handball entertainment. Both clubs had won two games so far in the tournament and wanted to continue their series on Sunday.

MAGNUSSON ON THE GRID

The game was accordingly. Wiegert started with Gisli Kristjansson, Omar Ingi Magnusson and Philipp Weber in the backcourt, the latter opening the game directly with a goal. The next two goals were contributed by Elvar Örn Jonsson – through quick transition play after inaccuracies by SG. The result was a 3-1 lead after a good three minutes played.

But then Flensburg found their way into the game better (5-4, 9th) and the encounter developed more and more tension. SCM set the pace, Flensburg followed suit: After just under 17 minutes played, the score was 10-10. Shortly before the break, the Schleswig team was even able to take the lead (16-14, 28th).

In the second half, Wiegert made a change – as in the previous friendlies: Felix Claar came on the half-left, Daniel Pettersson and Matthias Musche occupied the wings, Matej Mandic went into the Magdeburg goal. Meanwhile, it remained tight on the field. In the 36th minute, Musche scored to make it 19-19. Shortly afterwards, Albin Lagergren scored the lead again (20-19, 37.).

However, nothing was decided yet. With three tempo counter-attack goals in a row, the SG went to 20-22 (40th) – the reason for this was also a good Benjamin Buric between the posts of the Flensburgers. Just under a quarter of an hour before the final whistle, the scoreboard reported a 24-27 (46th).

In the 49th minute, Musche reduced the deficit to 26-27 and forced the opponents to call a timeout. The interruption helped to interrupt Magdeburg’s run. Until the final whistle, both sides continued to be neck-and-neck, but in the end Flensburg was ahead and secured the Wartburg Cup.

“But the signals I take with me are quite good”

Bennet Wiegert: “We made too many mistakes in the decisive game today. This tournament demanded a lot from both teams, both wanted to win. But you can also see that we are all still in preparation. We’ll see where we stand when it really starts. In this mode, we just have to spread the load and try things out – we had a very short summer break this year with the Champions League Final4 and the Super Cup that is now imminent. But the signals I take with me are quite good.”
