Victory against Eisenach: SCM wins second game at the Wartburg Cup

There was a lot to see for handball fans in Eisenach on Saturday. First, the Youth Wartburg Cup was organized, in which the Magdeburg B-Youth prevailed against SG Nickelhütte Aue (35:13) and ThSV Eisenach (34:13). Then, from 3.30 p.m., TBV Lemgo Lippe and SG Flensburg-Handewitt faced each other in the professionals. The two Bundesliga teams fought an exciting duel until the end and separated in the end with 32:34 (16:18).

SPEED INTO THE GAME

In the evening, the duel of SC Magdeburg against ThSV Eisenach followed. In the almost sold-out Werner-Aßmann-Halle, the numerous SCM fans saw a fast game: In the fourth minute, Gisli Kristjansson scored to make it 4-2, Matthias Musche increased shortly afterwards with his fourth goal to 9-4 (9th).

Thanks to a well-shifting defense and a strong Matej Mandic behind it, Eisenach’s goal frequency remained low. In the 14th minute, the keeper even entered his name in the statistics as a scorer and made it 11-4. Felix Claar increased to plus ten (17-7, 19th), then Musche scored first to make it 18 and then 19-7 (24th).

After the break, SCM coach Bennet Wiegert provided new energy on the flanks with Lukas Mertens and Oskar Vind, birthday boy Dominik Kuzmanovic moved between the posts. After the lead had shrunk a bit at times (22-16, 33rd), Vind scored from the right wing to make it 27-17 (37th), on the other side Mertens scored the 29-19 (41st). Kuzmanovic netted to make it 37-24 (52nd).

“That was just a good performance”

Tim Thielicke completed the 40 (40-28, 57th) and ultimately Magdeburg brought the victory safely over the finish line.

Philipp Weber: “It’s always fun to play here. It’s a great tournament every year with a good atmosphere and a terrific atmosphere. Our game was very consistent today. We pulled away quickly and then pulled it through to the end. That was just a good performance.”

ON SUNDAY AGAINST FLENSBURG

Finally, SCM will now meet SG Flensburg-Handewitt. This year, the Schleswig team has to compensate for the departures of Johannes Golla, Kevin Möller and Lukas Jörgensen, among others. Emil Bergholt, Aymeric Minne, Simon Müller and Arnar Arnarsson strengthen the team. On the first day, the SG had prevailed 31-28 (15-17) against Eisenach.

With two wins each, the two teams are now competing for the Wartburg Cup on Sunday. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
