SC Magdeburg celebrates the German championship with victory

Long before kick-off, it was clear in the GETEC Arena that it was a special evening. The green-red fans had prepared a championship choreography, the HBL issued the trophy – but before all that became relevant, a difficult handball game had to be mastered first.

And it was noticeable that the guests had not come to congratulate them. The North Rhine-Westphalians started agilely in defense and in return added a lot of speed, so that Magdeburg came under direct pressure in the early stages (6-3, 8th). But coach Bennet Wiegert’s team held their own. Omar Ingi Magnusson reduced the deficit to 8-9 (14th), Felix Claar equalized to 10-10 (17th), then Oscar Bergendahl scored to make it 13-12 (19th). The match remained exciting – and goal-rich. At half-time, the statistics already showed 38 goals.

After the break, the two teams came back from the dressing room equally energetically and neither of them managed to gain an advantage at first. In the 37th minute, Matthias Musche scored the 22-22, but Gummersbach countered again and again via the fast middle. So the fans got to see another high-class game – with a better outcome for SC Magdeburg.

Meanwhile, Tim Zechel played his 200th game in the Handball Bundesliga and celebrated a special series with SC Magdeburg: In this HBL season, no game was lost in the home hall. Only against THW Kiel did they have to give up a point.

After the final whistle, things got really emotional: First the ceremonial handover of the championship trophy was on the agenda, then the farewell of those players who will leave the club after the season.
