Before the Last Home Game: “I’m a Bit Wistful”

This week, two handball teams with a long history will play each other. These teams are VfL Gummersbach and SC Magdeburg. They are some of the oldest clubs in the Handball Bundesliga, which is the top handball league in Germany.

They have played many exciting matches before. This season, Magdeburg won the first game between them with a score of 32-31. It was a close and exciting finish. Magdeburg was the only team to win points against the fourth-place team, Gummersbach, in their home arena.

Now, Magdeburg will play at home. No visiting team has won in Magdeburg’s arena this season. Right winger Tim Hornke said before the game on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. CEST, “We have another very difficult home game ahead of us. Gummersbach is playing very well this season. They want to stay in third place. It will be a tough game, but we want to keep winning.”

After the game, Magdeburg will get the championship trophy because they are the league champions. For Tim Hornke, this is a big moment. He has won the title with Magdeburg three times. But this game is very special to him for another reason.

Hornke is 35 years old and will stop playing after this season. This will be his last game at home in the green and red Magdeburg jersey. He said, “I am a bit wistful. That means I feel a little sad but also happy. It feels strange to know this is my last game here. It will be very emotional.”
