What an achievement! After the brilliant first leg success at THW Kiel, the A-youth of SC Magdeburg secures the German championship on Friday evening in the second leg (36:35) in front of a record crowd.

The atmosphere in Magdeburg’s GETEC Arena could hardly have been better. In front of a record crowd of 4386 spectators, both sides played a thrilling game from the start – and with the number of spectators, the number of spectators once again exceeded the record (4190) set a few days earlier in Kiel at an individual event in youth handball.
SCM took the lead for the first time in the seventh minute with plus two (5-3). The guests from the north continued to resist (9-9, 13th), but with the loudly represented green-red supporters behind them, Aaron Hahn’s seven regained the lead (12-10, 17th) and even extended it. In the 19th minute, Tim Thielicke scored the 14:11.

The team was not only supported by thousands of fans. Klaus Zimmermann, State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior and Sports of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, Simone Borris, Mayor of the state capital Magdeburg, Andreas Michelmann, President of the German Handball Federation and spokesman for Teamsport Germany, as well as national coach Alfred Gislason and many other well-known faces from the sport were also on site. For example, numerous players of the first team, coach Bennet Wiegert and assistant coach Yves Grafenhorst watched the game from the stands.

Together they saw a high-scoring encounter, in which THW fought back again and again and also took the lead in the meantime (17-18, 27th). But the Magdeburgers did not let themselves be disturbed and got the necessary support thanks to their strong goalkeeper Anton Stemmer. Although it remained close until the end, on the one hand the guests were weakened by the red card against Rasmus Ankermann after a foul in the 42nd minute and on the other hand there was still the six-goal lead (40-34) from the first leg.

Kiel kept the lead (31-33, 55th), but the overall victory could no longer be taken away from the SCM team, which cheered, danced and celebrated with the crowd on the field after the final whistle.

Reaction to the game

National coach Alfred Gislason: “That was really good today. I think there was a lot of talent and a lot of good players on both sides on the field. It’s strong how the youth departments of the two teams have developed. For me, it was something special today because I have close ties to both clubs. Today, SC Magdeburg deservedly became German champions. Congratulations.”

SCM coach Aaron Hahn: “You can’t measure pride right now. We gave everything again and stuck to the plan. Sure, we throw away too much in between, but we have an outstanding Anton Stemmer in the back, so that balances out. This team always wants to win and has an incredible amount of quality. I think we’ll see some of them again in the Bundesliga. They already have an incredible maturity and mentality.”

Anton Stemmer: “It’s an indescribable feeling right now. Actually, I’m still a B-youth and to win this here with the A-youth is really unbelievable. I still can’t believe it. Add to that the hall and the support – that means an incredible amount.”

Malte Elze: “I’m incredibly proud of the team. What we’ve done all season, including the coach – that’s just strong. We pushed the lead away before the game. We wanted to win, we always want to win. We went in with everything we got. It was very, very fun to play here in the arena. I’m happy that we won. Now we can celebrate.”
