He was a strong constant in goal for SC Magdeburg and someone who always brought a good mood to the team. After three years, Sergey Hernandez is now leaving the club. We say thank you for the time together.
When Hernández moved from Benfica Lisbon to the Elbe, he was not the number one. He was part of a top-class goalkeeping team in a team that played for titles nationally and internationally and first had to find his way into a new role. In addition, there was the new environment and a league that makes high demands and leaves little time for adaptation.
Step by step, Hernandez developed into a stable backbone who can decide games with his explosive reaction speed and emotional presence on the field. He repeatedly showed immense mental strength by demonstrating his quality, especially in close games. Again and again he made saves, set impulses in the tempo game and scored goals himself like no one else between the posts.
But the Spaniard did not only become an important personality on the field. With his open, emotional manner and energy, he shaped the atmosphere within the team.
Now the 30-year-old is moving back to his homeland to FC Barcelona. “It’s not easy for me to leave this club. Thank you for this great time. Thanks to the city of Magdeburg – for me, this is the capital of handball. I will never forget you and always carry you in my heart,” says Hernandez.
But it is not a goodbye forever. After all, a reunion with his new club in the Champions League is not unlikely in the future.
