The Handball-Bundesliga GmbH today published which first and second division clubs will receive a license for the upcoming 2026/27 season. As expected, SC Magdeburg has been granted the license without conditions.

The economic performance has grown continuously and organically over the years, without making itself dependent on individual addresses or patrons. We would like to thank all spectators, employees, partners and sponsors who helped to develop this position for SC Magdeburg in order to remain fully competitive in the face of a currently very dynamic development of the sport of handball and a significantly increasing transfer market. In very challenging times for the economy as a whole, it is important to expand the substance that has been built up in order to ensure the basis for top handball in Magdeburg in the coming years,” says Marc-Henrik Schmedt, Managing Director of Handball Magdeburg GmbH.

The independent licensing commission decided today, Wednesday, on the granting of licenses in both professional Bundesligas and informed the executive committee of HBL e.V. and the clubs about the licensing award for the coming season. All 36 applicants will receive the licence for the 2026/27 season, depending on their sporting qualifications. This will officially open on August 22, 2026 with the Rexel Super Cup at the SAP Garden in Munich.
The economic stability of the handball Bundesliga clubs, which was already attested to in last year’s licensing procedure, has continued to improve despite the difficult overall economic situation, this pleasing development was the result of this year’s review procedure. There was no negative licensing decision, only a few clubs have to meet conditions in the course of the coming season, which shows that the Bundesliga clubs are on a very good path overall. The chairman of the licensing commission, Rolf Nottmeier, pointed out that the reduction of negative balance sheet equity by the clubs prescribed by the licensing regulations had been consistently continued.
The licensing commission of the Handball-Bundesliga e.V. made the decisions after examining the submitted documents and in the context of constructive licensing discussions with the licence applicants. As part of the licensing process, the financial capacity of the clubs is checked. Infrastructural and legal criteria are also being examined. The licensing process ensures economic stability, fair competition and integrity for German professional handball.
In addition to Chairman Rolf Nottmeier, Director of the Minden Labour Court, the Licensing Commission is made up of Olaf Rittmeier (Tax Consultant), Frank Bohmann (HBL Managing Director) and Mattes Rogowski (HBL Sports & Licensing Management).
The licensing decisions for promoted teams from the 3rd leagues to the 2nd HBL will be announced in the coming weeks. Information on the licensing procedure can be found under www.daikin-hbl.de.
