Although the club competition is suspended for SC Magdeburg in January, several players of the German champions are still in action – some even in their green and red living rooms. Who exactly will play at the 2027 World Championship in the GETEC Arena has now been determined.

In Munich’s Hofbräuhaus, the large stage was prepared. DHB CEO Marc Schober, DHB President Andreas Michelmann, national coach Alfred Gislason and many other names from the handball world had gathered here on Wednesday evening – surrounded by numerous media representatives – for the draw of the groups at the 2027 World Cup in Germany.

There are 32 participants in the tournament, which opens on January 13. The games will be played in Cologne’s LANXESS arena, the ZAG Arena in Hanover, Munich’s SAP Garden, Stuttgart’s Porsche Arena, Kiel’s MERKUR Ostseehalle – and the GETEC Arena.

With Portugal and Iceland, the heads of Groups F and H, who will play the preliminary round in Magdeburg, were already decided in advance. Now it is also clear who else the local audience can look forward to.

Gisli Kristjansson, Omar Ingi Magnusson and Elvar Örn Jonsson will face Japan, Bahrain and North Macedonia. Portugal, who finished fourth at the 2025 World Cup, will face Algeria, Poland and the Faroe Islands.

The German team led by national player Lukas Mertens (Group A) will face Uruguay, Tunisia and Serbia in Munich.

The demand for tickets is already very high in Magdeburg. According to the DHB, a new contingent will be released on September 4 at 12 noon.
