SC Magdeburg is entering into a partnership with the Bundeswehr in the 2025/26 season. The focus for the Army Combat Training Centre (GÜZ) in Gardelegen, which is just under 50 kilometres away, is on a regional perception of the Bundeswehr employer brand in the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide.

“We have been in a very constructive exchange with those responsible at the GÜZ in Letzlingen for about a year. Through several information visits on site, we were able to get an idea of the importance of the location for the region,” says Managing Director of Handball Magdeburg GmbH, Marc-Henrik Schmedt, who also emphasizes that he also met numerous SCM fans among the soldiers and civilian employees during the visits.

Currently, the Bundeswehr employs more than 1,500 employees in the civilian and military sector in the Altmark in one of the most modern training facilities for armed forces in Europe. Furthermore, the Bundeswehr is also constantly offering new training positions and thus career opportunities at the GÜZ. Together with the Burg site, with up to 1,700 employees, there are thus well over 3,000 jobs, combined with the corresponding purchasing power, in the Magdeburg catchment area. In addition, there are annual orders to the regional economy in the millions.

“The Bundeswehr is not only a major employer in the Altmark, but has been intensively supporting the economy of the structurally weak Altmark region for decades. The core of the cooperation is therefore the consolidation of these structures, which are important for Magdeburg and northern Saxony-Anhalt, through personnel recruitment,” explains Schmedt. “The Bundeswehr continues to be regionally active with other handball Bundesliga clubs and supports top athletes in other sports, who can celebrate international success as a result. The best example is Olympic champion and swimming world champion Lukas Märtens from SCM, who is employed as a non-commissioned officer by the Bundeswehr’s sports promotion group.”
