Week off? The Daikin Handball Bundesliga is on pause, but training continues in Magdeburg. Nine Magdeburgers are also on the road for their nations and will play for qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Germany.
While match operations at club level are suspended, the focus this week is on the national teams. Manuel Zehnder and Nikola Portner will face Italy with Switzerland on May 13 (7 p.m.) and May 17 (6 p.m.). The first leg of the World Cup qualifiers will take place in Zurich, the second leg will be played on Sunday in Faenza.
In the third and final phase of the playoffs for the 2027 World Cup in Germany, Israel and Spain will also play each other. Both associations have agreed in advance to play the games on neutral ground in cooperation with the Argentine Handball Federation. SCM goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez will therefore play with the Hispanos in the games on May 15 (0:00 CEST) and May 16 (20:30 CEST) in Buenos Aires.
For the Swedes, it is against Croatia. This will lead to another internal duel: Felix Claar, Albin Lagergren, Oscar Bergendahl and Daniel Pettersson will meet Matej Mandic. The games will kick off on 13 May (18:10 CEST) in Kristianstad and on 16 May (17:00 CEST) in Varazdin.
Magnus Saugstrup, meanwhile, will play two friendlies with Denmark against Germany. The first match will take place on 15 May at 19:30 CET at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, while the second leg will be played on 17 May at 15:30 CET in Cologne (both live on Dyn).
Meanwhile, Lukas Mertens has been given a break by national coach Alfred Gislason. Icelanders Gisli Kristjansson, Omar Ingi Magnusson and Elvar Örn Jonsson will also remain in Magdeburg and, together with the rest of the team, will concentrate on the final spurt of the season with SC Magdeburg. There they continue on May 21 at home against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
