Second game this week, second time green-red living room! For SC Magdeburg, the next points are at stake at home in the Opel Handball Bundesliga this weekend. Coach Bennet Wiegert expects the next hard-fought duel.
After the successful start to the EHF Champions League against Kolstad on Wednesday, the next task in the domestic league awaits SCM. “It will definitely be challenging again – like everything in the Bundesliga. There are no easy games and anything can happen at the moment. We have seen that in the many close matches,” warns coach Wiegert.
In fact, the last matchday had some close games to offer. Two draws and four games that were decided by only one goal – including SCM’s 31-30 win at HBW Balingen-Weilstetten – provided excitement. SCM’s upcoming opponent was also there: HSG Wetzlar secured the first point of the season with a 31-31 win against ThSV Eisenach.
Coach Rúnar Sigtryggsson’s team has thus started the new season without a win. The Central Hessians first lost 33-35 at home to newly promoted SG BBM Bietigheim, followed by a 31-27 defeat at TBV Lemgo Lippe. The best scorer is currently the newly signed Nikolaj Læsø with 16 goals. Magdeburg’s Matthias Musche is on the other hand with 19 goals in three SCM games won.
“It was a bit wave-like at Wetzlar. They played a good ball in the meantime,” Wiegert emphasised HSG’s quality ahead of the game on Sunday (3 p.m., tickets online). “We have to be ready. You don’t do anything in the league when you walk past.”
