This week it’s all about again! At TV Großwallstadt, SC Magdeburg will play in the DHB Cup for a place in the round of sixteen. Handball fans can look forward to an atmospheric duel between the two traditional clubs.

Seat tickets were sold out within a very short time, and standing room was not available for long – the Untermainhalle in Elsenfeld is completely sold out. That’s one of the reasons why SCM coach Bennet Wiegert is looking forward to the match at TV Großwallstadt on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.). “For us, of course, it’s nicer to play in a full hall. And if there is such enthusiasm, we haven’t done much wrong lately,” says the 43-year-old.

Unbeaten in the league and with six Champions League victories behind them, the coach now wants to build on the success before the national team week with his team. The opponent is none other than one of the most traditional handball clubs in Germany. The six-time German champions still occupy sixth place in the all-time table of the Handball Bundesliga despite relegation in 2013 – only one place behind SCM.

Although the omens have changed since the glory days with the Lower Franconian, the current seventh-placed team in the second division has already been able to set some accents this season and have so far prevailed in the cup against SG BBM Bietigheim (35-34) and in the first round against the Wolves Würzburg (32-31).

“This is an ambitious second division team that has caused several surprises this season,” says Wiegert. “But it’s a knockout game, it’s all about progressing for us. We have to function, get back into the rhythm quickly and get back into the SCM gene.”
