What a start! The handball players of SC Magdeburg win their first home game of the season against the Füchse Berlin on Thursday with 36:32 (13:14). The German champion goes into the Opel Handball Bundesliga with 4:0 points.

The atmosphere in the GETEC Arena was hard to beat before kick-off. A sold-out hall, green and red colours everywhere and a fan choreography – from the very beginning, the anticipation of the first home game of this season was palpable. In terms of sport, the match also quickly picked up speed. In the fourth minute, Gisli Kristjansson scored for the first lead (2-1) and shortly afterwards made it 3-2 (5th).

With a well-placed Matej Mandic between the posts, SCM kept the Berliners with only two goals conceded in ten minutes. But since Lasse Ludwig also set his accents on the other side, the game remained low in goals on both sides. In the tenth minute, Matthias Musche scored from the seven-metre line to make it 4-2, and a little later Albin Lagergren made it plus three (5-2, 12th).

Mandic, but also the middle blocker strongly set up by Elvar Örn Jonsson and Magnus Saugstrup, ensured that the Foxes resorted to the seventh outfield player. The remedy was successful. In the 27th minute it was 9:12. But SCM was not deterred and reduced the deficit to 13:14 before the break – and Berlin’s Frederik Simak also saw red after a foul.

After the restart, it remained a gripping game. Both teams fought for every centimetre in defence and attack, both threw themselves at every ball. The advantage of the Magdeburgers: their own crowd. Again and again, the SCM fans pushed – and were able to celebrate their team’s renewed lead in the 35th minute (17-16). Kristjansson then tanked his way through the opponent’s cover to make it 19-19 and made it 22-19 in the same way (40th).

When Daniel Pettersson made it 23-19 and Kristjansson increased it again, the hall was almost unstoppable. One chant followed the other – including for Saugstrup when he scored the plus-six (26-20). It remained fast-paced until the end. However, since SCM always found an answer to the Foxes’ game despite the red card for Gisli Kristjansson (53rd), the next two points were ultimately on the books and the green-red supporters could continue to celebrate.
