What a game! SC Magdeburg also wins the second match of the group stage of the Machineseeker EHF Champions League and wins at FC Barcelona 22-21 (15-12). With this, the team around coach Bennet Wiegert achieves history.

Already in the early stages it became clear: In this duel, no one gives anything to anyone. A save was followed by the same on the other side, a goal by the opponent. 2:2, 4:4, 6:6 – the game film was completely balanced. However, because SCM defended attentively, fought for every ball and was concentrated up front, the defending champions were able to gradually gain an advantage. In the 16th minute, Omar Ingi Magnusson scored to make it 9-6 from Magdeburg’s point of view.

The team was not only able to defend this lead, but even extend it in the meantime. Felix Claar scored the first four-goal lead (13-9, 24th), until the break it was 15-12. In the second half, however, Barcelona took the lead and reduced the deficit to 15-14 (33rd) – not least because Magdeburg was negligent with the ball. Magnusson scored the first goal after the restart via seven-metre penalty in the 37th minute (16-14).

However, as Sergey Hernandez once again proved his quality between the posts, the game stabilised over the defence. Although the attack was constantly presented with new tasks by the compact defense of the Catalans, while the hall contributed to a heated atmosphere, SCM did not let itself be disturbed. In the 42nd minute, Philipp Weber scored to make it 18-15.

In the 49th minute, the hosts managed to reduce the deficit again (19-18) and the game remained exciting – with a 21-21 tie in the 56th minute. However, the final phase belonged to SCM again. Barca missed the last penalty throw and ultimately the first points ever were scored at the Palau Blaugrana.
