Just in the GETEC Arena and now already on the way to Egypt. SC Magdeburg is heading to the IHF Club World Championship – and is travelling with big goals.
“I think this competition is often neglected, but it’s a tournament for which you have to have done something beforehand. We won the Champions League and can now win the next title,” says SCM coach Bennet Wiegert. “It is very important to me and I am extremely proud that we can now participate in it for the fifth year in a row .”
He will be in the new capital of the kingdom with his team for eight days, with four games on the schedule. A program that surpasses the previous one once again. Nevertheless, the Magdeburg native is approaching the task in good spirits: “By our standards, it’s still quite relaxed because we have little travel stress and are together in one room for a week. I can work on a lot and take a lot with me.”
With the games against the California Eagles and Sharjah SC, SCM hopes to create a good prerequisite for the semi-finals as the best team in the preliminary round. Meanwhile, the top teams from Veszprém and Barcelona could be waiting, and the home team Al Ahly is also considered the favorite for the knockout phase.
“I’m looking forward to this adventure. We have the goal of winning four games and everyone knows what that means,” says Wiegert, who has already lifted the trophy in 2021, 2022 and 2023, including silver last year.
