After derby success: SC Magdeburg wins tournament

In the Erzgebirgshalle in Lößnitz there was a lot of activity from lunchtime at the latest. Wheel of fortune, goal-throwing station, shopping facilities – the EHV had provided a lot of entertainment for its 100th club anniversary together with outfitter Hummel.

In terms of sport, things got to work from 1.30 p.m. onwards. In the small final, the hosts faced SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and said goodbye to the Bundesliga team with a 29:45 defeat.

At 4 p.m., the final was finally kicked off: the derby between SC Magdeburg and SC DHfK Leipzig. The Saxons had shown themselves in good form the day before and not only showed off from the circle, but also set accents in the back area and kept picking up the pace. So SCM was warned.

The first SCM goal was scored by Oskar Vind, who set up directly on his 26th birthday. It was the starting signal for a run: Magdeburg turned a 0-1 into a 4-1 (5th). Leipzig caught up (4-4, 7th), but in the 11th minute it was Vind again who restored the old gap (7-4). As the game progressed, the match remained wave-like and Bennet Wiegert’s team was unable to pull away significantly.

After the break, Magdeburg took the lead for the first time. After the team had tested the seventh outfield player for a long time, Wiegert switched to the usual positional play. First, Magnus Saugstrup scored the 19-15 (35th), before Matthias Musche extended the lead with a counter-attack (21-16, 36th) and Noah Hensen put it at plus six (22-16, 37th). Daniel Pettersson made it 24-17 (40th).

Within a few minutes, the score became clear. Although the Green-Reds continued to vary in terms of squad constellation, Wiegert’s team confidently secured the derby success in the second half of the game – and thus also the tournament victory.
