Thanks to strong defence: SC Magdeburg wins against Kiel

From the first second, the hall shook. In the sold-out GETEC Arena, the green and red fan community was immediately on the spot, clapping and singing their team along. The top game character of the match became immediately clear – with a great atmosphere and handball at the top level. Omar Ingi Magnusson was the first to maneuver the ball into the net before Kiel followed up and the two sides took turns facing new tasks in each attack. Exciting: Not only the offensive lines, but also the two goalkeepers initially acted on an equal footing. Matej Mandic in the Magdeburg goal and Andreas Wolff in the Kiel goal immediately defused several shots. After five minutes played, the score was 2-2.

Although the German national goalkeeper was at a rate of 44 percent for the record champions in the meantime – Mandic went one better with his 57 percent, so that his front men pulled away with a 3-0 run to 5-2 (11th). Albin Lagergren was able to double the lead in the 23rd minute when he scored to make it 11-5, Felix Claar scored a little later to make it 13-6 (26th).

An important key was the defence. Whether with Magnus Saugstrup or Oscar Bergendahl in the centre, who were actively supported by Antonio Serradilla in the middle block – there was hardly a way through for the guests from the north. Not too much changed after the break. However, Dominik Kuzmanovic then switched between the posts and took away two clear chances from THW immediately after the restart.

On the other hand, SCM remained safe. Magnusson scored from the seven-yard line to make it 19-12 (36th) – and thus scored his 1250th HBL goal. In the 51st minute, the Iceland-born player netted for a plus-eight lead (30-22) and once again made the GETEC Arena cheer. Kiel kept pulling up, but Magdeburg did not let up. With a strong team performance, the team finally secured the next victory and at the same time took the lead in the table.
