It’s going to be international again! The EHF Champions League starts the new season on Wednesday. SC Magdeburg starts at home against Kolstad – and thus also welcomes an old acquaintance in the green and red living room.

“We’re happy that the Champions League is starting again,” says head coach Bennet Wiegert, who is now competing in the Champions League for the fifth time in a row with SCM. After the titles in 2023 and 2025 as well as the bronze medal at the end of last season, the journey should also go as long as possible this year.

At the start of the group stage, the team will face Kolstad Handball. “We have an exciting group and start against Kolstad directly against a team that relies a lot on Norwegian talent, but also has internationally experienced players in its ranks. It’s an interesting mix,” explains Wiegert. “The fact that we start the new Champions League season at home in front of our fans can only help us. We’re looking forward to this duel.”

“It’s going to be awesome,” Magdeburg captain Magnus Saugstrup is also looking forward to the home game on Wednesday (20:45 CEST, secure tickets online or at the box office). “With this new format, every game in the group stage is even more important. It’s going to be exciting for sure. We have to be there right away.”

Kolstad travels to the Elbe with some players known from the Bundesliga. Gøran Johannessen was under contract in Flensburg. So is Simon Jeppsson, who also played for HC Erlangen. In addition, there is Magnus Gullerud, who wore the Magdeburg jersey from 2020 to 2022. “Magnus is a great guy, really funny. It’s always a little more fun to play against good friends,” Saugstrup looks back on the reunion with his former circle runner colleague. “We won’t be quite as nice to each other for 60 minutes, but before and after the game it’s different. We’ll certainly exchange ideas and spend a little time together.”

NEW MODE

From this season, 24 clubs will compete against each other – eight more than last season. Initially, the clubs will start in six groups of four. The top two qualify for the main round, the third and fourth-placed teams continue the season in the EHF European League.

In the main round, the new format provides for two groups of six. The best four will then advance to the quarterfinals. For fifth place, they will then continue in the EHF European League, the bottom of the group will be eliminated.

The semi-finals and final will be played as usual at the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4 in Cologne. This will take place on June 12 and 13, 2027 in the LANXESS arena.
