Change in the backcourt of SC Magdeburg: Elvar Örn Jonsson leaves the German champions. The 28-year-old right-hander will join another club after the 2026/27 season.

Jonsson moved from MT Melsungen to SC Magdeburg in the summer of 2025. Before the four years in Hesse, the Iceland international was on the field for Skjern Håndbold and his hometown club Selfoss. During his time at SCM, he brought his qualities to bear both in the Bundesliga and at international level and won the German championship with the club. Next year, the paths will now separate.

Bennet Wiegert, Head Coach and Managing Director Sport: “It’s a shame that Elvar has decided to leave us early. He integrated quickly with us and fulfilled his role within the team perfectly. I wish him all the best for his future and I am one hundred percent sure that Elvar will give everything for the club and our team until his last day at SC Magdeburg.”

Elvar Örn Jonsson: “I had a great time in Magdeburg and am grateful for the experiences I was able to gain here. From day one, I felt very comfortable in the club, in the team and in the city. I will miss the fans and the special atmosphere in the GETEC Arena very much. Winning the German championship was a very special moment and the fulfilment of a big dream. Even though my path will continue elsewhere after this season, my full focus is on SC Magdeburg. I will do everything I can to ensure that we can celebrate further successes together and fight for titles.”
