Let’s go to the next preparatory tournament! This weekend, SC Magdeburg travels to Eisenach for the Wartburg Cup. There, SCM coach Bennet Wiegert’s team will test against three Bundesliga teams.

The record is impressive: In the first two weeks of the pre-season season, SC Magdeburg has played five test matches – all successfully. The most important thing is that the new signings have fitted in perfectly, all players have received their playing time and the new squad is getting better and better.

The next tasks will now follow in Eisenach. “We take every chance to get better. Now there are three games against strong opponents – all from the Bundesliga, all with their challenges,” says Magdeburg’s Dominik Kuzmanovic, who has been in goal for SCM since this season. “It fits perfectly into this phase of preparation. We want to continue on our path there.”

In the opener, SCM will meet TBV Lemgo Lippe in Eisenach’s Werner-Aßmann-Halle. This means that there will be a direct reunion with ex-Magdeburg player Christian O’Sullivan. The former SCM captain was just at the training camp in Austria with his new club, where the team tested against Magdeburg, Champions League opponents in the preliminary round, HC Kriens-Luzern (29:30) and also played a game against the Austrian first division team Alpha Hard (39:19).

The following day, the game against host ThSV Eisenach is scheduled and the final game is against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

With this tight schedule, regeneration is also an issue in addition to all the demands in preparation. Especially since Omar Ingi Magnusson has recently been sidelined with an injury. “In Eisenach, we can now expect another three tough tests in quick succession. Of course, we want to convince again, but at the same time we have to make sure that we manage the load well. After all, it’s about the first title shortly afterwards,” explains Bennet Wiegert.

Things will get serious next week: At the Rexel Super Cup in Munich, SC Magdeburg, as German champions, will meet DHB Cup winners Füchse Berlin on 22 August.
