SCM PLAYER TIM HORNKE ANNOUNCES END OF CAREER

SC Magdeburg is saying goodbye to a formative figure of the club: Right winger Tim Hornke will end his active career after this season.
Born in Hanover, he moved from his hometown to SCM in 2010, for which he played for the following four years. After an intermezzo from 2014 to 2019 at TBV Lemgo, Hornke returned to the Elbe and has worn the green and red jersey again ever since.
The 35-year-old has played a significant role in the club’s successes in the recent past. In his 466 Bundesliga games so far, he has scored 1492 goals. In addition, he won every conceivable title with SC Magdeburg, won the German championship, DHB Cup, EHF European League, EHF Champions League, IHF Super Globe – many of them several times. With his experience and work ethic, he is a cornerstone of the team and a role model for young players.
SCM coach Bennet Wiegert: “Tim embodies what SC Magdeburg is all about – passion, team spirit and, above all, reliability. We are infinitely grateful to him for everything he has done for this club in recent years and wish him and his family only the best for the future: health, joy and good luck in everything that comes.
Tim is one of the last players I still actively played with. Maybe that’s why it was so difficult for me to accept his decision directly. But of course I respect them in every respect. Our time together goes back to the SCM YoungsterS, where I was already allowed to train him. This long connection makes the moment special for me.
Personally, I am infinitely grateful to Tim for his trust and boundless loyalty. But before we think about his departure now, we still have common goals, and I know that Tim will give everything until the last matchday so that we are successful as a club.”
Tim Hornke: “After many intensive and wonderful years of handball, I have decided to end my career after this season. SC Magdeburg was and is a very special club for me, which has shaped me both athletically and personally. I’m incredibly grateful for the time we spent together, for my teammates, coaches, the whole environment and of course our fans.
Magdeburg has become much more than a place to play handball for me over the years. I am at home here, I am rooted in the city and its community and I am very happy to continue living here after my active time. It means a lot to me to be able to end my career right here.
Now I just want to enjoy the rest of the season and make it something very special.”
In addition to the numerous triumphs with the club, there are also his achievements with the German national team. In 2008, Hornke became European Youth Champion, and in 2011 Junior World Champion. He made 23 appearances for the senior team, scoring 53 goals. In 2024, he participated with the national team in the Summer Olympics in Paris, where the team won the silver medal and was later awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
