The first quarter-final has been played! In the Machineseeker EHF Champions League, SC Magdeburg wins at OTP Bank-Pick Szeged in Hungary with 35:28 (15:14). This lays the foundation for the second leg in Magdeburg.

Both teams felt each other out a bit in the early stages, but then the tempo increased. A 1:2 (5th) turned into a 4:3 (7th) within just under two minutes. Shortly afterwards, Felix Claar scored for the first three-goal lead (6-3, 9th). With a good overview and conviction in the duels, SCM then extended the lead further. Omar Ingi Magnusson made it plus four with a penalty throw (8-4, 13th), Magnus Saugstrup made it 10-5 (16th) from the circle.

But as quickly as the advantage was gained, Szeged came back. In the 20th minute, the hosts had reduced the deficit to 10-9 and provided new challenges with both their attentive defense and variable attacking play. A little later, Szeged equalized (11-11, 22nd). In the arena, which was now well heated thanks to the home fans, Magdeburg was not deterred – Magnusson made it 14-12 (26th).

After the break, the duel continued on an equal footing, with both Magdeburg and Szeged playing to their strengths again and again. When Matthias Musche scored the 19-16 (37th), everything was still open. With a well-placed Sergey Hernandez between the posts, however, SCM kept the upper hand and improved again. In the 45th minute, the initial lead was restored again (25-20), then Albin Lagergren scored to make it 26-20 (46th).

Until the final whistle, it was noticeable that the two teams were still fighting for every goal, after all, nothing has been decided yet after the final 35-28. However, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team has created a good basis for the second leg on 7 May, 18:45 CET in the GETEC Arena.
