SC Magdeburg is in the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4

Semi-finals! In the Machineseeker EHF Champions League, SC Magdeburg also wins the quarter-final second leg against OTP Bank-Pick Szeged. With a 45-37 (23-19) victory, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team advances to the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4.

Already in the first minutes of the game it became clear: The guests had not travelled from Hungary to give away the match after the 28:35 in the first leg. Aggressive in defence and with quick transition play, Szeged made it 1-2. But Magdeburg had other plans. Sergey Hernandez thwarted two clear chances and in return, the SCM offense netted. Whether from the back or on the outside – coach Bennet Wiegert’s team was accurate and took the lead 5-2 (6th).

After that, the tempo remained high, both Magdeburg and Szeged did everything they could to score quick goals. In the 18th minute, Matthias Musche scored to make it 15-11. Shortly afterwards, the left winger also added the plus-five (17-12, 19th) and Szeged took the first timeout. However, there was no direct effect. Omar Ingi Magnusson increased the lead from the penalty line to 18-12 (21st).

Although the lead was a little smaller in the meantime (20-17, 27th) and the game became increasingly physical – Mario Sostaric saw red due to a foul on Gisli Kristjansson in the 30th minute – SCM kept the upper hand. This did not change in the second half. In the 40th minute, the scoreboard reported a 31-26 score, ten minutes later it was already 40-31 and another ten minutes later it was finally clear: SCM will advance to the TruckScout24 EHF FINAL4 for the fourth time in a row. And: With 45 goals, Magdeburg sets a new record and scores the most goals ever scored in a Champions League quarter-final.

The final tournament will take place on June 13 and 14 in the LANXESS arena in Cologne. Also qualified are the Füchse Berlin, Aalborg Handbold and FC Barcelona. The semi-finals will be drawn on 12 May at 15:00 (live on the EHF YouTube channel).
