Championship celebration and farewell – a special evening in green and red

Omar Ingi Magnusson distinguished himself as the best shooter, Felix Claar impressed with his style of play and was voted SCM Player of the Season, Sergey Hernandez convinced with strong quotas between the posts. There are many stories that can be told about this season. Stories of gruelling games, atmospheric halls and a schedule that hardly gave the players any time to breathe. Above all, however, it is the story of a team whose unity and commitment made the difference.

That’s why it was particularly difficult to say goodbye to seven players on Wednesday evening. Accordingly, it became emotional during the farewells on the pitch. “That was a special year. I wouldn’t want to miss this experience with this great team,” said Sebastian Barthold. Manuel Zehnder and Tim Zechel also addressed personal words to fans, teammates and the club.

The two goalkeepers Sergey Hernandez and Nikola Portner were also visibly moved. Both looked back on their time in Magdeburg and said goodbye with great gratitude. “I had incredible support here,” Portner explained. Hernandez described Magdeburg as the “capital of handball”, which will always hold a special place for him.

Tim Hornke, who will end his career after this season, and Christian O’Sullivan, whose path ends after more than ten years at SCM, provided further goosebump moments. As a special tribute to his merits, the Norwegian’s jersey was pulled under the hall roof and the long-time captain was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
