Magdeburg starts well in the Wartburg Cup
The first game of the tournament was in the Werner-Aßmann-Halle. Both teams played fast, even though it was very hot.
After three minutes, the score was 3:2 for SCM (Sport Club Magdeburg). Dominik Kuzmanovic, the goalkeeper, played very well. This helped the team get a bigger lead.
- Matthias Musche scored from the seven-metre line to make it 5-2 at the 6th minute.
- Oskar Vind made the score 8-4 at the 9th minute.
- Gisli Kristjansson increased the lead to 13-5 at the 13th minute.
The coach, Bennet Wiegert, tried new moves. He used four backcourt players and no circle runner at first. (A circle runner is a player who plays near the goal area.) This made the other team, Lemgo, have a hard time defending.
Kristjansson and the team used the space well. At the 23rd minute, Felix Claar scored to make it 18-12.
Playing with a pivot (another name for circle runner) continued. Oscar Bergendahl scored and the score became 19-12 at the 27th minute.
In the second half, more players got to play. Daniel Pettersson and Matthias Musche played on the wings (sides). Felix Claar also played more in attack, and Kristjansson took a break.
Even with these changes, the game stayed the same. Matej Mandic, a substitute goalkeeper, played well after Kuzmanovic. Philipp Weber scored two goals just after the break. The score was 22-15 at the 33rd minute.
SCM made a few mistakes but still kept the lead. The score was 24-20 at the 42nd minute.
Magdeburg’s coach said, “Of course it gets better and better, but I am very happy with how we played.”
About 15 minutes before the end, Magnus Saugstrup joined the game and helped the team. Kristjansson and Claar worked well together in attack.
The lead grew to 31-23 at the 50th minute. The Green-Reds (Magdeburg) finished the game with a safe win.
Elvar Örn Jonsson said, “I think we played well today. Our defence was good. We played fast and found ways to score, even though we are still getting ready and trying new things. It’s getting better, and I am very happy with our play.”
Next Game: Saturday against the Hosts
The Wartburg Cup will continue with a game against ThSV Eisenach, the host team.
The coach of Eisenach, Sebastian Hinze, has some new and some old players this year. Some players left: Philipp Meyer, Timothy Reichmuth, Max Benecke, Vincent Büchner, and Alexander Saul. New players joined: David Moré, Elias Scholtes, Felix Montebovi, and Mats Grupe.
Eisenach will play their first game on Friday at 8 p.m. against SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
The game between Magdeburg and Eisenach will start on Saturday at 6 p.m.
