Tim Hornke on His Future: “We’ll See Each Other Again”

Q: You have spent much of your career in Magdeburg. What makes the city special for you?
A: Many things. I started my professional career here in Magdeburg. I will also end my career here. This city is a big part of my handball life. I met my wife here. My children were born here. We want to live in Magdeburg for a long time. So, the city and the club are very important to me.

Q: Many say the fans make a special atmosphere in the hall. What do you think?
A: I agree. Magdeburg fans are very special. I think you will not find this kind of support anywhere else in Germany or maybe the world. I will miss going to GETEC Arena very much when I stop playing.

Q: Looking back at your years, if you had to make a best team from your past teammates, who would you pick?
A: It is hard to choose seven players. I would take the current team and many players from the past. I would add Piotr Chrapkowski because he always created a good mood in the locker room and off the field. I enjoyed playing with him.

Q: Who was a tough opponent that annoyed you?
A: Many opponents were tough sometimes. When I was young, about 17 or 18, playing in Hannover in the second division, I faced Tomasz Tłuczyński. He was a Polish national player and a winger. He liked to play one-on-one, which was hard to defend against. I found that difficult.

Q: After such a long time playing, what will you miss more: the games or the team atmosphere?
A: For now, I am happy not to feel the constant excitement or adrenaline from games. I look forward to a quieter time. Still, I will miss both the games and the team. I will miss the boys. I will stay in Magdeburg and visit games. I will sit with the team in the locker room sometimes.

Q: How will your life continue now?
A: A year and a half ago, I started a company while I was still playing. It helped me balance my life with handball. The company works in real estate – managing and selling properties. I want to grow this business. I already have some properties and will add more.

Q: Can people contact you if they need a property manager?

A: I want to thank the fans for their support over the years. I have said this many times, but I want to say it again because it is important. The way you support us is world class.
