Groups for the 2027 Handball World Cup in Magdeburg

In Munich, at a place called Hofbräuhaus, a big event was held. Important people from the handball world came together. They included Marc Schober (DHB CEO), Andreas Michelmann (DHB President), and Alfred Gislason (national coach). Many reporters were there too. They met on Wednesday evening to draw the groups for the 2027 World Cup in Germany.

The tournament will have 32 teams. It will start on January 13, 2027. The games will happen in different cities and arenas:

  • Cologne – LANXESS arena
  • Hanover – ZAG Arena
  • Munich – SAP Garden
  • Stuttgart – Porsche Arena
  • Kiel – MERKUR Ostseehalle
  • Magdeburg – GETEC Arena

Two groups will play in Magdeburg: Group F and Group H. The top teams already known are Portugal (Group F) and Iceland (Group H).

Now people know more about which teams will play in Magdeburg. Here are some details:

  • Iceland’s players Gisli Kristjansson, Omar Ingi Magnusson, and Elvar Örn Jonsson will play against Japan, Bahrain, and North Macedonia.
  • Portugal, who came fourth in the 2025 World Cup, will play against Algeria, Poland, and the Faroe Islands.
  • Germany’s team, with player Lukas Mertens in Group A, will play in Munich against Uruguay, Tunisia, and Serbia.

Many people want to buy tickets to watch games in Magdeburg. The German Handball Federation (DHB) said they will sell more tickets starting on September 4 at 12 noon.
