An era ends: Christian O’Sullivan leaves SC Magdeburg

Christian O’Sullivan joined SC Magdeburg in the summer of 2016. Before that, he started playing handball in Norway with Bækkelagets SK. Then he played for two years with a Swedish top team, IFK Kristianstad.

At SC Magdeburg, which is by the Elbe River, he won many big trophies:

  • EHF European League in 2021
  • IHF Super Globe in 2021, 2022, and 2023 (this is a world club championship)
  • EHF Champions League in 2023 and 2025 (the best club competition in Europe)
  • DHB Cup in 2024 (a German cup competition)
  • German Championship in 2022, 2024, and 2026

Christian played for Norway 206 times. He became a very important player in Magdeburg. For many years, he was the team’s captain. As captain, he showed strong leadership, worked hard, and was very professional. He helped make this time one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

Tonight, SC Magdeburg will say goodbye to Christian after the home game against VfL Gummersbach.

Bennet Wiegert, the coach and sports director at SC Magdeburg, said:

“Ten years ago, Christian O’Sullivan and SC Magdeburg began a journey together. We were a hungry team, and he was a young, ambitious, and talented player. We could not imagine how far we would go. Today, he is one of the most successful players ever at SC Magdeburg, and I owe him a lot. As our team captain, we worked closely together. We had ups and downs, but we always wanted the best for the team and the club. His commitment and loyalty are amazing. I wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Christian O’Sullivan said:

“My time in Magdeburg was very special. I did not just win many trophies here. I also made many good friends. It was an honor to play for this club. It will be hard to leave. I am proud of what we built together. It was a long journey that ended very well.

In my career, I got to travel around the world and live my dreams. I am very thankful for that. Now it is time for me to move on. But I will always keep SC Magdeburg in my heart. I will visit many times. I wish the club and the team all the best and much success in the future.”
