SC Magdeburg enjoys handball fun at the Hummel Cup

Even before the game, there were some reasons to celebrate. First, SCM coach and managing director of sport Bennet Wiegert was awarded the State Order of Merit for his outstanding services as a handball player and coach as well as his commitment to youth sports and social projects. This was followed by the honouring of the four Magdeburg participants in the U18 European Championship in Serbia, who had won the gold medal together with the German selection last weekend.

The perfect setting throughout the day was provided by an autograph session, the game of the YoungsterS against SV Grün-Weiß Wittenberg-Piesteritz (41:31) as well as an extensive entertainment program including a bouncy castle, hands-on activities and a show program by media partner radio SAW.

VICTORY AGAINST GWD MINDEN

At 7 p.m., the German champions got down to business – and there was also a lot for the fans to experience in the match against GWD Minden (37-27). Both teams started with tempo, with Magdeburg finding their way into the game, especially on the wings. In the seventh minute, Daniel Pettersson scored to make it 4-3, Matthias Musche provided the first two-goal lead with a seven-metre shot (6-4, 10th). As the game progressed, the lead was further extended: 9-4 (12th), 13-7 (19th) – SCM made the ball fast.

On the other hand, relegated Minden also underlined its ambitions and reduced the deficit to 15-13 (24th). By the break, however, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team had pulled away again (18-13) and continued this performance in the second half. New signing Oskar Vind scored in the 34th minute to make it 22-14.

“Today was a day for the fans”

Over the 60 minutes, Bennet Wiegert set his entire bench in motion, giving each of his players the opportunity to present themselves in front of their home crowd. In the 43rd minute, the score was 27-18, in the 53rd minute Saugstrup increased to plus ten (33-23), and in the end SCM secured the Hummel Cup with a clear result.

Bennet Wiegert: “Today was a day for the fans, so the result is almost secondary. When I see the rush here, we can’t have done so much wrong last year. In the game, we showed ourselves properly – every single one. There were a lot of positive things about it.”

Before the first competitive game of the season is scheduled with the Rexel Super Cup , SCM will test again under competitive conditions at the Wartburg Cup. A real endurance test awaits against hosts ThSV Eisenach, TBV Lemgo Lippe and SG Flensburg-Handewitt. Then it’s a matter of gathering the last insights, continuing to get used to it and then starting the new season well prepared.
