Beginning a new season is always fun

The gallop has already been successful: With the 38:31 victory in the Rexel Super Cup against the Füchse Berlin, SCM coach Bennet Wiegert and his team have started the new season in the best possible way and were able to secure the first title directly.

But that’s not the only thing the Magdeburgers have brought with them from Munich. “I hope that we all take a good feeling with us. Now it’s going to be a mixture of self-confidence and the right tension that we need before the start of the Bundesliga,” said the coach ahead of the first league game against VfL Gummersbach on Sunday (3 p.m., live on Dyn and Welt.tv).

Last season, the Oberbergische had to accept only one defeat in their Schwalbe Arena – the very close 31:32 against SC Magdeburg on matchday 17. In this respect, captain Magnus Saugstrup and Co. are warned. “Starting a new season is always exciting. For us, it’s about to go to one of the most difficult halls in the league to play in,” says the pivot. “Gummersbach is a real challenge. We have to be right there – also because VfL is a direct competitor for points. The club has developed very strongly in recent years and has a top team.”

After finishing fourth last year, the traditional club wants to attack again this season. Coach Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson has to cope with the departure of German international Julian Köster, among other things. In addition, Dominik Kuzmanovic, a former Gummersbach player, has been between the posts at SCM since this season.

New to the team are the exceptional Swedish talent Nikola Roganovic and the two Spanish internationals Ignacio Biosca and Alex Dujshebaev.

“It’s no secret that Gummersbach is a team that can beat anyone. They have developed massively in recent years. I have a lot of respect for that,” explains Bennet Wiegert. “For us, it’s about getting off to a good start in the league – because a start like that can be incredibly important in the end.”

After the game, it’s worth staying tuned: Then the draw for the DHB Cup will follow. The matches of the second round, in which SCM will also enter, will be drawn by ex-professional Kim Voss-Fels. The 2nd round of the DHB Cup competition will be played from 22 to 24 September 2026.
